One year after the Police Council confirmed the appointment of Alkali Usman Baba as the substantive Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) is yet to update its history page, which still portrays Mohammed Adamu as the ‘current IGP.’
The Nigeria Police Force is the principal law enforcement and lead security agency in Nigeria. Designated by the 1999 constitution (as amended) as the national police of Nigeria with exclusive jurisdiction throughout the country. It was formed in 1930 and has staff deployed across the 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
ROUNDCHECK Findings
Mohammed Abubakar Adamu (born 17 September 1961) is the 20th Nigerian inspector-general of police and was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari on 15 January 2019, replacing Ibrahim Kpotun Idris (rtd) of Niger State
On the 6th of April, 2021, Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, approved the appointment of DIG Usman Alkali Baba as acting Inspector General of Police, replacing Mohammed Abubakar Adamu.
On the 4th of June, the Police Council confirmed Usman Alkali as the 21st Inspector General of the Nigerian Police.
However, ROUNDCHECK observed that the information made available on the history page of the NPF website shows otherwise.
We found out that on the history page of the NPF website, Mohammed Adamu still retains the position of the IGP, even after being replaced a year ago.
The current IGP Usman Alkali is being displayed in other parts of the websites as the current IGP, but the history page is yet to be updated, as at the time of this report— capable of misinforming the public.
Verdict
Researchers, Journalists, Students, and the general public can get misinformed if the history page of the NPF website isn’t updated. The police website and all its pages should be updated to keep the public well informed.
