The International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) has announced the selection of Caleb Ijioma, a journalist with ROUNDCHECK as one of the successful fellows for its “Countering Misinformation and Promoting Media Literacy Project”. The project, supported by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Abuja, is focused on combating misinformation and enhancing media literacy in Nigeria.

The ICIR, a non-profit media organization committed to promoting good governance through investigative journalism, selected a group of 30 journalists from various Nigerian media organizations. These selected persons will participate in a comprehensive capacity-building program set to take place in Abuja in October 2023.

The primary objective of this initiative is to equip fact-checkers with the necessary skills and financial support to engage in critical fact-checking and responsible reporting. By doing so, the organization aims to elevate the overall quality of information in Nigeria, enhancing responsible journalism and media literacy.

Following their training, the selected fact-checkers will take on the responsibility of conducting similar training sessions within their respective media organizations. This approach is designed to ensure a sustainable and widespread impact among their colleagues, creating a ripple effect of knowledge dissemination across the media landscape.

The participants in the ICIR’s initiative represent a significant step forward in the fight against misinformation in Nigeria. Through their dedication to responsible journalism and media literacy, they aim to contribute to a more informed and discerning society.
