How we Fact-Check
At ROUNDCHECK, we carry out our fact-check through the following under-listed steps.
Claim – This is the first process. At Roundcheck, after identifying information that Is capable of misinforming the public and has an impact on the people, through sourcing different social media platforms, accessing government documents, listening to the news and reading statements by government officials or individuals etc, we then highlight the information gotten in summary.
Full Text – In this stage, we highlight the full statements or information gotten, and also identify the actors or players, or where the information emanated from. This is written verbatim, as seen in the information gotten.
Verification – This verification process is called ROUNDCHECK FINDINGS. This forms a major part of the report. Here, we break down the claims, if they are more than one, and after reaching out to the person who made the claim, we verify the authenticity of the claim by using publicly available data. We also consult the website of Nigeria’s official Statistics agency, National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to get data and statistics that would be useful for our verification process. We also reach out to experts to give their expert views about a claim or information, which will help us in our analysis.
Also, during our verification process, we make use of tools to know if an image or video has been doctored/edited, tools also help us to know if a website is malicious. Tools are an important part of this process as it provides us with insight into the claim.
Conclusion – In this stage, we present a verdict according to our findings. Having gone through the verification process, we rate the claim using a verdict icon; could be correct, or otherwise.
Our Fact-Checking Is Rated On The Following:
1. CORRECT: This indicates that all elements in the claim are verifiably TRUE.
2. PARTIALLY TRUE: This rating indicates that the claim is not absolutely true, as there are some elements that are not correct.
3. INCORRECT: This rating indicates that the claim and all the elements surrounding it are verifiably FALSE.
4. MISLEADING– This rating indicates that the claim and all the elements surrounding have been interpreted outside the meaning of the source.
5. MISQUOTED – This rating indicates that the claim and all the elements surrounding it are quoted in the wrong context from what the source meant.
6. UNCONFIRMED– This rating indicates that the claim and all the elements surrounding it have not been confirmed from any source.
