Cardinal Robert Prevost, has been elected as Pope Leo XIV, and he takes the helm of the world’s 1.4 billion Roman Catholics.
This is following the passing of Pope Francis. A Chicago native, Prevost’s long journey to the papacy has been defined by his work in Peru, deep theological education, and strong leadership within the Augustinian Order.
He is now the first U.S.-born to become Pope.
His appointment brings with it a blend of international experience and a pastoral commitment that has shaped his religious life.

Cardinal Prevost’s Life and Career
Cardinal Prevost had a good academic foundation, having received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Villanova University, followed by a Master of Divinity from the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
His rigorous academic journey culminated in advanced studies in canon law at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum) in Rome, where he earned both a Licentiate and a Doctorate in Canon Law.
Missionary Work
In 1985, Prevost began his missionary work in Peru with the Augustinian Order, where he spent significant time serving as a parish priest, seminary teacher, and diocesan official.
His leadership role as the Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023 saw him guiding his diocese through the political and social challenges of Peru, including a period of national political instability.

Prevost’s leadership as the Prior General of the Augustinian Order (2001-2013) established him as a well-respected figure in the global Catholic community.
Papal Election
On May 7, 2025, Cardinal Prevost was elected as Pope Leo XIV after a decisive conclave vote.
According to a report by New York Times, the cardinals’ decision was widely seen as a move to maintain continuity with the pastoral priorities of Pope Francis while seeking a figure with broader international experience.
Prevost’s commitment to the poor, his deep faith in the pastoral mission, and his leadership in the Dicastery for Bishops all made him a strong candidate.
