Claim

A post has been circulating on social media, especially on Whatsapp, that the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo is giving out #33,000 to Nigerians as Campaign Support. 

It reads:

“PROF YEMI OSINBAJO #33,000 GRANT FOR NIGERIANS.”

Who is Prof Yemi Osinbajo? 

Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo is a Nigerian lawyer, professor, and politician who is the 14th and current Vice President of Nigeria since 2015. A member of the All Progressives Congress, he previously served as Attorney General of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and holds the title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

He’s currently running his second term as the Vice President of Nigeria with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Recently, He showed his interest to run for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the platform of APC and he made his official presidential declaration speech on the 11th of April, 2022.

Roundcheck Findings 

A click on the post link gives a clear insight into the grant.

 It states:- 

  “Vice President PROF YEMI OSINBAJO on Monday 25th of April 2022. Offer a matching grants of #33,0000 to individual to support youth and all Nigerians to solicit for your support upon declaration of my interest to run for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

“My idea for the introduction of Matching Grants to make Our Country to become self-reliant” 

After which individuals were requested to fill the form below that entails 

  • Your name 
  • Phone Number 
  • Address
  • Your Email 

ROUNDCHECK noticed an individual can click the “ apply now” option on the site and move to the next stage without filling the form. The second stage entails a congratulatory message and three questions to proceed to the next stage, which reads:

 

“Congratulations ,You have been selected to benefit from this #33,000 support fund payment provided by VP PROF YEMI OSINBAJO FOR NIGERIANS #33,000 for all” 

  • Question 1 of 3: What is your Employment Status?
  • Question 2 of 3: What is your Marital Status? 
  • Question 3 of 3:Why do you want this grant?

The last question leads to the final stage which reveals an individual can only get the support fund when they share the information with 15 friends or 5 groups on WhatsApp.

“You may get the support fund with only one step. Kindly click the ‘invite friends/groups ‘ button below to share this information with 15 friends or 5 groups on Whatsapp so that they can also benefit.” 

At the footer of the first page of the site, ROUNDCHECK noticed the number of people that visited the site by clicking the link. This action was being recorded by whoever created the site and that shows clicking on the link was used to generate traffic for the site.

The site URL link {https://osinbajogrants.top-offer.online}doesn’t have a notable Generic Top-level domain such as .net, .ng, .org, .edu, .com, .info, .gov but it possesses a Top-level domain {.online} which the office of the Vice President of the federal republic of Nigeria won’t use. It shows if the link was from the Vice President the country code Top level domain would have been used. 

Also, ROUNDCHECK made a thorough check on  Prof Yemi Osinbajo verified Facebook and Twitter handles and it revealed they do not have any information on the said campaign support grants. 

With the aid of Website Informer, ROUNDCHECK was able to get a broad analysis and information about the said campaign support grants site.  The results show:- 

  • Site advisor :- 0 likes / 0 dislikes 
  • Child safety;- 0%
  • Trust :- 0%
  • Privacy:-0%

Conclusion and verdict

The message, shared by WhatsApp users that Prof. Yemi Osinbajo is giving N33,000 to Nigerians as campaign support, is FALSE-, as research has shown, it is not VALID and should be discarded.
