As part of its efforts to monitor and combat the growing wave of disinformation related to gender issues, RoundCheck, a prominent fact-checking organization, launched a gender disinformation desk on October 12, 2024. The desk is aimed at addressing the global surge in false narratives that disproportionately affect women and limit gender equality.

The newly established desk is designed to critically analyze misleading gender narratives, using fact-checking tools and media literacy principles to provide the public with accurate information and combat the harmful effects of gendered misinformation, which has been linked to perpetuating stereotypes.

Caleb Ijioma, the Executive Director of RoundCheck, emphasized the growing impact of gender-based disinformation in today’s society, noting, “Disinformation surrounding gender has become a significant issue, influencing how people perceive various topics in our society. While it is acknowledged that these false narratives affect both men and women, women are disproportionately impacted. In response to this, a dedicated desk has been established at RoundCheck to equip researchers with the necessary training and tools to critically analyze these narratives.”

Gender disinformation is a growing concern globally, particularly as it impacts marginalized groups more severely. According to the U.S. Department of State, gender disinformation is often targeted toward women with themes that include the use of gendered stereotypes, hyper-sexualization, and political targeting of women to shame and discredit them.

Studies have shown that gendered disinformation can lead to real-world consequences such as online violence and harassment, especially for women in media, politics, and leadership roles. A UNESCO report revealed that over 73% of female journalists globally have faced online violence, often driven by gendered disinformation.

In Africa, where social media plays an increasingly influential role in shaping public opinion, the impact of such disinformation can be severe. According to a study by the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, misinformation campaigns have intensified across the continent, with gendered disinformation playing a key role in perpetuating discrimination and social exclusion.

The importance of addressing these issues cannot be overstated. Misinformation related to gender has the power to influence societal attitudes, limit women’s participation in public life, and exacerbate inequalities. This makes initiatives like RoundCheck’s gender disinformation desk particularly vital, especially in regions where digital spaces are rapidly expanding and evolving.

RoundCheck’s gender disinformation desk will utilize advanced research methodologies and fact-checking tools to monitor and respond to gender-related misinformation across online and offline platforms.

The initiative is expected to play a crucial role in curbing the spread of false information and enhancing public understanding of gender issues. “The goal is to help the public better understand the truth and counteract the harmful effects of misinformation on gender-related issues,” said Caleb Ijioma.

By providing a reliable platform for identifying and debunking gender disinformation, RoundCheck hopes to foster a more informed and equitable discourse on gender issues. The organization encourages the public and media professionals to engage with the new desk and take part in the effort to combat the spread of false information.
