As the world grapples with the rampant spread of disinformation and misinformation, media literacy has emerged as a critical tool for empowering citizens to discern fact from fiction. In the lead-up to the 2023 Nigerian general elections, the pervasiveness of false information posed a significant threat to the integrity of the electoral process.
Disinformation, which is deliberately fabricated and disseminated with the intent to deceive, and misinformation, which is inaccurate information that is spread unintentionally, can have a profound impact on public opinion and decision-making. During the election period, false information were widely circulated on social media, seeking to sow discord, manipulate voters, and undermine trust in democratic institutions.
In the face of this onslaught, fact-checkers played a vital role in debunking false claims and providing the public with accurate information. Among the fact-checkers who made significant contributions during the election period was the Nigerian Fact Checkers Coalition (NFC). The NFC is a network of fact-checking organizations working together to promote accuracy and accountability in Nigerian media. During the elections, the NFC debunked hundreds of false claims and provided the public with accurate information about the candidates, the electoral process, and the results of the elections.
However, the battle against disinformation is far from over. As technology continues to evolve, so too do the methods used to spread false information. In order to effectively combat disinformation, it is essential that citizens are equipped with the skills and knowledge they need to critically evaluate the information they encounter.
Media literacy education is essential for fostering a more informed and discerning citizenry. By teaching people how to identify bias, assess credibility, and verify information, media literacy can help to inoculate them against the effects of disinformation.

In addition to media literacy education, it is also important to hold those responsible for spreading disinformation accountable. This means that as citizens, we should not overlook those who share misinformation.
